In 2005, the Nigerian Association of Central California requested the Stockton Sister Cities Association develop a sister city relationship with Nigeria. This past year, the Nigerian Association of Central California, Stockton Sister Cities Association and the Oshimili South Local Nigerian State have been working together to build a sister city relationship. On March 6, 2006, the Board of Directors of the Stockton Sister Cities Association approved adding Asaba, Nigeria as the seventh sister city for Stockton, California. On May 23, 2006, the Stockton City Council adopted a resolution to establish a Sister City relationship between Asaba, Nigeria and Stockton, California, USA.
Similar with Stockton, Asaba has in-land ports in Nigeria's Delta State, similar climate, an agricultural farming community, and is a growing metropolis.
Asaba is the Delta State Capital of Nigeria with a population of 500,000. Located on a hill at the western edge of the majestic River Niger, Asaba forms a connector between western, eastern, and northern Nigeria through the River Niger. Asaba is also a major agricultural community and is an oil-rich region in the Delta State of Nigeria.
